Dalmatian Traits
The Dalmatian originated in Dalmatia,
the area that was once Yugoslavia in the
1400s. Dalmatians were initially used
as a carriage dog, trotting alongside
the coach. Continuing this tradition with
horse-drawn fire engines, which led to
its moniker a “fire dog”.
Dalmatians have a square-proportioned
build. They are sturdy but on the thin
side. The Dalmatian is 50-55 lbs and 22-24
inches tall. Dalmatians have a bold spotted
black pattern on a white coat. There are
variations with liver colored spots. The
Spots are usually round in shape clearly
defined and do not overlap. Dalmatians
have a sleek glossy coat. Dalmatians require
very little grooming just occasional brushing
to remove the dead hair.
Dalmatians are bred for endurance and
can run for miles. Dalmatians are playful
and enthusiastic. They require a lot of
exercise and may have a tendency to roam.
Dalmatians can be aggressive with strange
dogs but tend get a long well with horses.
Dalmatians can be overly energetic for
young children.
Dalmatians have an average life span
of 12-14 years.
