A generally sturdy breed, though a handful of hereditary conditions are more common in Akitas than in the general dog population.
Common Hereditary Conditions
Hip & Elbow Dysplasia
A joint malformation common in large breeds; screening the parents before breeding lowers the odds substantially.
Hypothyroidism
An underactive thyroid is relatively common in the breed, causing weight gain and lethargy; manageable with daily medication once diagnosed.
Pemphigus Foliaceus
An autoimmune skin disorder seen more often in Akitas than most breeds, causing crusting and lesions; typically managed with veterinary immune-suppressing treatment.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
A gradual, inherited deterioration of the retina that can lead to blindness; DNA testing can identify carriers before breeding.
Preventive Care
Choosing a breeder who screens for hip, elbow, and eye health meaningfully lowers risk. Regular veterinary checkups become more important after age five, when thyroid and autoimmune conditions are most likely to appear. Any unusual skin crusting or hair loss is worth a prompt vet visit rather than a wait-and-see approach.
