Common Hereditary Conditions
Hip Dysplasia
A joint malformation that can affect mobility; screening of breeding parents lowers the odds in puppies.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
A gradual, inherited deterioration of the retina; a DNA test can identify carriers before breeding.
Luxating Patella
A kneecap that slips out of place, common in smaller varieties of the breed; mild cases may need no treatment.
Hypothyroidism
An underactive thyroid can cause weight gain and lethargy; a simple blood panel diagnoses it.
Preventive Care
Hip and eye clearances from a breeder cover the most significant hereditary risks. Regular grooming, beyond aesthetics, also helps catch skin issues that the breed’s thick coat can otherwise hide. Periodic thyroid panels as the dog ages round out a solid preventive routine.
