Hip & Elbow Dysplasia

Progressive Retinal Atrophy
A gradual, inherited deterioration of the retina; a DNA test can identify carriers before breeding.
Congenital Hypothyroidism
A thyroid disorder occasionally documented in the breed; a blood panel can diagnose it, and daily medication manages it well.
Preventive Care
Hip, elbow, and eye clearances from a breeder cover the most significant hereditary risks. Feeding smaller, more frequent meals helps reduce this large breed’s bloat risk. Controlled growth during puppyhood — avoiding overfeeding — supports long-term joint health.
