Breed Health
Bouvier des Flandres Health Issues
A generally hardy working breed, though its large size and dense coat bring a few conditions worth screening for.
Common Hereditary Conditions
Hip & Elbow Dysplasia
A joint malformation common in large working breeds; screening breeding parents lowers the odds in puppies.
Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (Bloat)
A life-threatening emergency common in large, deep-chested breeds; smaller, more frequent meals help reduce risk.
Glaucoma
An inherited eye condition causing increased eye pressure, documented in the breed; early veterinary detection can help preserve vision.
Subaortic Stenosis
A heart condition occasionally seen in the breed, narrowing blood flow near the heart; a veterinary cardiac exam can detect the associated murmur.
Preventive Care
Hip, elbow, and eye clearances from a breeder cover the most significant hereditary risks. Feeding smaller, more frequent meals helps reduce bloat risk. Regular grooming, beyond aesthetics, also helps catch skin issues that the breed’s dense coat can otherwise hide.
Did You Know?
The Bouvier des Flandres’s bushy eyebrows and beard aren’t just for looks — they historically helped protect the eyes and face while working in thick brush and rough weather.
