A generally healthy sporting breed, the Boykin Spaniel is nonetheless prone to a small number of hereditary conditions worth screening for.
Common Hereditary Conditions
Hip Dysplasia
A malformation of the hip joint that can cause pain and arthritis over time; OFA hip screening of breeding stock lowers risk in puppies.
Exercise-Induced Collapse
A hereditary neuromuscular condition triggering hind-limb weakness after intense exercise or excitement; a DNA test identifies carriers.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
A degenerative eye disease leading to gradual vision loss; genetic testing can screen breeding stock before it appears clinically.
Ear Infections
The breed’s floppy ears and frequent water exposure make it more prone to ear infections than upright-eared breeds; regular cleaning and drying after swimming help prevent them.
Preventive Care
A breeder who provides OFA hip clearance and DNA testing for exercise-induced collapse and PRA meaningfully reduces the odds of these conditions in a puppy. Because this is an active water-retrieving breed, drying and checking ears after every swim or bath goes a long way toward preventing chronic ear infections, one of the more common everyday issues owners report.
