Canaan Dog Health Issues
One of the hardier breeds on this site, thanks to millennia of natural selection, though a few conditions are still worth screening for.
Common Hereditary Conditions
Hip Dysplasia
A joint malformation that, while less common than in many breeds, can still affect mobility; screening of breeding parents lowers the odds.
Hypothyroidism
An underactive thyroid can cause weight gain and lethargy; a simple blood panel diagnoses it.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
A gradual, inherited deterioration of the retina, documented occasionally in the breed; a DNA test can identify carriers.
Epilepsy
Idiopathic epilepsy is documented in some lines; seizures are typically managed with daily medication once diagnosed.
Preventive Care
Hip and eye clearances from a breeder further reduce already-low hereditary risk in this naturally hardy breed. Periodic thyroid panels as the dog ages help catch issues early. Any new seizure activity is worth a prompt veterinary visit to establish a treatment plan.
