Teaching the Down Command
"Down" asks more of a dog than "sit" — it’s a more vulnerable position, which is exactly why it’s such a useful marker of trust and calm once learned.
Lure From a Sit
Starting from a seated position, lower a treat slowly to the floor between the paws, guiding the nose down and back until the dog’s elbows touch the ground — then mark and reward immediately.
Add the Word Once the Motion Is Reliable
Only attach the verbal cue "down" after the dog is consistently following the lure into position — saying the word too early just teaches the dog to ignore it.
Practice in Varied Settings
A dog that lies down reliably in the living room may not do so on a busy sidewalk without separate practice — generalizing the command to new environments takes deliberate repetition.
Did You Know?
Because "down" puts a dog in a more exposed position than sitting, some naturally more anxious dogs learn it more slowly — patience matters more here than with most commands.
