Common Hereditary Conditions
Hip Dysplasia
A joint malformation that can affect mobility; screening of breeding parents lowers the odds in puppies.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
A gradual, inherited deterioration of the retina; a DNA test can identify carriers before breeding.
Glycogen Storage Disease
A rare, serious inherited metabolic disorder documented in the breed; a DNA test can identify carriers.
Hypothyroidism
An underactive thyroid can cause weight gain and lethargy; a simple blood panel diagnoses it.
Preventive Care
Hip and eye clearances from a breeder cover the most significant hereditary risks. Requesting a glycogen storage disease DNA test result is worth the extra step for puppies intended for breeding. Given the breed’s heavy Arctic coat, careful monitoring in hot weather helps prevent overheating.
