Breed Health
English Mastiff Health Issues
As one of the heaviest dog breeds, the Mastiff carries several serious health considerations tied directly to its massive size.
Common Hereditary Conditions
Hip & Elbow Dysplasia
A joint malformation extremely common in giant, fast-growing breeds; screening breeding parents lowers the odds in puppies.
Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (Bloat)
A life-threatening emergency in which the stomach fills with gas and twists; deep-chested giant breeds face among the highest risk of any dogs.
Cardiomyopathy
A heart muscle disease seen more often in giant breeds; regular cardiac screening can detect it before symptoms appear.
Entropion
An inward rolling of the eyelid, occasionally seen in the breed’s loose facial skin; corrected with a minor surgical procedure.
Preventive Care
Controlled growth during puppyhood — avoiding overfeeding — is one of the most protective steps for this fast-growing giant breed. Feeding smaller, more frequent meals helps reduce bloat risk. Hip, elbow, and cardiac screening before breeding, along with regular vet checkups as the dog ages, round out a solid preventive approach.
Giant breeds like the English Mastiff generally have shorter lifespans than smaller dogs, which is why many owners begin more frequent senior wellness visits earlier than they would for a mid-sized breed.
