Breed Health
Neapolitan Mastiff Health Issues
As one of the heaviest and most loosely skinned breeds, the Neapolitan Mastiff carries several significant health considerations.
Common Hereditary Conditions
Hip & Elbow Dysplasia
A joint malformation extremely common in giant, fast-growing breeds; screening breeding parents lowers the odds in puppies.
Skin Fold Dermatitis
The breed’s abundant loose skin and deep wrinkles can trap moisture and bacteria if not cleaned regularly, leading to painful skin infections.
Entropion & Ectropion
Eyelid abnormalities very common in the breed’s loose facial skin, sometimes needing surgical correction.
Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (Bloat)
A life-threatening emergency in which the stomach fills with gas and twists; deep-chested giant breeds face among the highest risk of any dogs.
Preventive Care
Daily cleaning and drying of skin folds is essential for this breed, more so than almost any other, to prevent chronic infections. Controlled growth during puppyhood — avoiding overfeeding — supports long-term joint health. Feeding smaller, more frequent meals helps reduce bloat risk.
Did You Know?
The Neapolitan Mastiff’s abundant loose skin, prized in the show ring, requires daily maintenance that few other breeds demand — regular wrinkle care is essentially non-negotiable for keeping this breed healthy.
