Common Hereditary Conditions
Hip Dysplasia
A joint malformation that can affect this athletic breed’s mobility; screening of breeding parents lowers the odds in puppies.
Cherry Eye
A prolapsed gland in the third eyelid, occasionally documented in the breed; typically corrected with a minor surgical procedure.
Deafness
Congenital deafness appears somewhat more often in predominantly white-coated individuals; BAER hearing testing can identify affected puppies.
Epilepsy
Idiopathic epilepsy is documented in some lines; seizures are typically managed with daily medication once diagnosed.
Preventive Care
Hip screening before breeding lowers the odds of dysplasia in puppies. BAER hearing testing is worth requesting for puppies from predominantly white-coated parents. Because the Pointer is so high-energy, ensuring adequate daily exercise also supports its overall wellbeing.
Did You Know?
The Pointer’s instinctive "point" is so deeply ingrained that the behavior can be observed in puppies as young as a few weeks old, well before any formal field training begins.
