Bred along the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay to retrieve waterfowl in brutal winter conditions, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a tough, powerfully built breed with a distinctive oily, waterproof coat. Independent and devoted, it remains one of the hardiest retrieving breeds.

According to breed history, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever descends from two Newfoundland-type puppies rescued from a shipwrecked English brig off the coast of Maryland in 1807.
