Common Hereditary Conditions
Anesthesia Sensitivity
Like other sighthounds, Salukis have very low body fat, which affects how anesthesia drugs metabolize — always confirm a vet has sighthound experience before any procedure.
Cardiomyopathy
A heart muscle condition documented occasionally in the breed; regular cardiac screening can help detect it before symptoms appear.
Hemangiosarcoma
A cancer of the blood vessels documented somewhat more often in the breed; regular checkups and prompt attention to any new lump are important.
Hypothyroidism
An underactive thyroid can cause weight gain and lethargy; a simple blood panel diagnoses it.
Preventive Care
Always flag the breed to a vet before any anesthesia or sedation, given its unique drug sensitivity. Regular cardiac screening and periodic wellness checkups support early detection of the breed’s more significant health risks. A securely fenced yard is essential given the breed’s strong prey drive and speed.
