Common Hereditary Conditions
Patellar Luxation
A kneecap that slips out of place, common in this breed; mild cases may need no treatment.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
A gradual, inherited deterioration of the retina; a DNA test can identify carriers before breeding.
Hip Dysplasia
A joint malformation that can affect mobility; screening of breeding parents lowers the odds in puppies.
Allergies
Skin allergies and sensitivities are relatively common, often showing up as itching or recurrent ear infections.
Preventive Care
Eye and hip clearances from a breeder cover the most significant hereditary risks. Regular grooming during the breed’s heavy seasonal shedding also serves as a useful skin check. Any recurring itchiness or ear irritation is worth a vet visit to rule out allergies before they become chronic.

The Shiba Inu’s thick double coat "blows" heavily twice a year, and daily brushing during these periods significantly reduces shedding around the house.
