Common Hereditary Conditions
Hip & Elbow Dysplasia
A joint malformation common in large breeds; screening breeding parents lowers the odds in puppies — a founding goal of the breed’s development.
Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (Bloat)
A life-threatening emergency common in large, deep-chested breeds; smaller, more frequent meals help reduce risk.
Degenerative Myelopathy
A progressive spinal cord disease inherited from German Shepherd ancestry, typically appearing later in life; a DNA test can identify carriers.
Panosteitis
A temporary, painful bone inflammation sometimes seen in fast-growing large-breed puppies; usually resolves with rest and vet guidance.
Preventive Care
Hip and elbow screening before breeding is central to this breed’s founding health goals. Feeding smaller, more frequent meals helps reduce bloat risk. Requesting a degenerative myelopathy DNA test result from a breeder further reduces hereditary risk in puppies.
Did You Know?
The Shiloh Shepherd was developed in part specifically to reduce the rate of hip dysplasia and structural issues that some breeders felt were becoming common in German Shepherd show lines by the mid-20th century.
