Common Hereditary Conditions
Hip Dysplasia
A joint malformation that can affect mobility; screening of breeding parents lowers the odds in puppies.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
A gradual, inherited deterioration of the retina; a DNA test can identify carriers before breeding.
Intervertebral Disc Disease
The breed’s long back relative to its short legs raises disc problem risk somewhat; avoiding jumps from furniture helps reduce risk.
Persistent Pupillary Membrane
A congenital eye condition documented occasionally in the breed, usually not affecting vision significantly; a vet exam can identify it.
Preventive Care
Hip and eye clearances from a breeder cover the most significant hereditary risks. Avoiding jumps from furniture or stairs helps protect this breed’s long back. Keeping a lean weight further reduces strain on the spine.
Did You Know?
The Swedish Vallhund’s body shape, similar to the Corgi’s, is another example of chondrodysplasia (a form of dwarfism) selectively bred for low-to-the-ground herding work.
