Breed Health
Tibetan Terrier Health Issues
A generally healthy breed, though a few hereditary conditions are worth screening for before breeding or adoption.
Common Hereditary Conditions
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
A gradual, inherited deterioration of the retina; a DNA test can identify carriers before breeding.
Lens Luxation
A hereditary condition in which the eye’s lens becomes dislodged, documented in the breed; regular eye exams help catch it early.
Hip Dysplasia
A joint malformation that can affect mobility; screening of breeding parents lowers the odds in puppies.
Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis
A rare, serious hereditary neurological disorder documented in the breed; a DNA test can identify carriers.
Preventive Care
Requesting eye and genetic disease screening from a breeder covers the most significant hereditary risks. Hip screening further reduces risk in puppies. Regular grooming, beyond aesthetics, also helps catch skin issues that the breed’s long, dense coat can otherwise hide.
Tibetan Terriers have unusually large, flat feet that act almost like natural snowshoes, an adaptation suited to navigating the snowy terrain of the Himalayan monasteries where the breed originated.
