Common Hereditary Conditions
Tracheal Collapse
A weakening of the windpipe cartilage relatively common in toy breeds, causing a honking cough; a harness instead of a neck collar reduces strain on the throat.
Patellar Luxation
A kneecap that slips out of place, common in small breeds; mild cases may need no treatment, severe cases occasionally require surgery.
Dental Disease
The breed’s small jaw often crowds teeth, raising periodontal disease risk; daily brushing and regular dental checkups matter.
Portosystemic Liver Shunt
A congenital condition in which blood bypasses the liver, seen somewhat more often in this breed; bloodwork can identify affected puppies early.
Preventive Care
Using a harness instead of a collar for daily walks meaningfully reduces strain on this breed’s sensitive trachea. Daily tooth brushing and regular dental cleanings help offset crowded-teeth risk. Puppy wellness bloodwork can help catch a liver shunt early, when treatment is most effective.
