What Is the Most Intelligent Dog Breed?
Canine intelligence is usually measured along three separate lines — working obedience, instinctive skill, and adaptive problem-solving — and few breeds top all three at once.
Working and Obedience Intelligence
This measures how quickly a breed learns new commands and how reliably it obeys them — Border Collies, Poodles, and German Shepherds consistently rank at the top of most published rankings on this measure.
Instinctive Intelligence
This reflects a breed’s aptitude for the work it was originally bred to do — a Bloodhound’s tracking ability or a Border Collie’s herding sense count as a different kind of intelligence than obedience alone.
Adaptive Intelligence
This is a dog’s ability to solve novel problems on its own — an area where independent-minded breeds like the Afghan Hound or Basenji, often ranked low on obedience, can actually excel.
