Patellar Luxation

Dental Disease
The breed’s small jaw often crowds teeth, raising periodontal disease risk; daily brushing and regular dental checkups matter.
Portosystemic Liver Shunt
A congenital condition in which blood bypasses the liver, seen somewhat more often in this breed; bloodwork can identify affected puppies early.
White Shaker Syndrome
A tremor disorder documented in small white breeds including the Maltese; usually manageable with veterinary treatment once diagnosed.
Preventive Care
Daily tooth brushing and regular dental cleanings meaningfully reduce this breed’s elevated periodontal disease risk. Puppy wellness bloodwork can help catch a liver shunt early, when treatment is most effective. Any unexplained full-body tremor is worth a prompt vet visit rather than assuming it is simply nerves.
