Common Hereditary Conditions
Hip Dysplasia
A joint malformation that can affect mobility; screening of breeding parents lowers the odds in puppies.
GM1 Storage Disease
A rare, serious hereditary metabolic disorder documented in the breed; a DNA test can identify carriers before breeding.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
A gradual, inherited deterioration of the retina; a DNA test can identify carriers before breeding.
Juvenile Dilated Cardiomyopathy
A rare, serious heart condition documented in some lines, appearing at a young age; a veterinary cardiac exam can help detect it.
Preventive Care
Requesting GM1 storage disease and eye DNA test results from a breeder covers some of the most significant hereditary risks. Hip screening further reduces risk in puppies. Regular grooming, beyond aesthetics, also helps catch skin issues that the breed’s dense, curly coat can otherwise hide.
