Common Hereditary Conditions
Patellar Luxation
A kneecap that slips out of place, common in small breeds; mild cases may need no treatment.
Hypothyroidism
An underactive thyroid appears somewhat more often in this breed, causing weight gain and lethargy; a blood panel diagnoses it.
Mucopolysaccharidosis
A rare, serious hereditary metabolic disorder documented in the breed; a DNA test can identify carriers before breeding.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
A gradual, inherited deterioration of the retina; a DNA test can identify carriers before breeding.
Preventive Care
Requesting a mucopolysaccharidosis DNA test result from a breeder is worth the extra step for puppies intended for breeding. Periodic thyroid panels as the dog ages help catch issues early. Eye and patella screening further reduce hereditary risk in puppies.
